Intelligent beats (the 8-bar loop at 3:44 is quite perfect, entrancing), beautiful sampling, amazing interpretation of that phenomenon in UK Bass that is the wobble, not forgetting the built-in rewind and break down after the first 32, awesome!

The label responsible for ‘Eva Mendes’ are Hypercolour, who made their debut in 2006, and have had a couple of EP’s since from none other than the Princess of all-things electronic, Maya Jane Coles. Check out the pounding ‘Parallel Worlds’:

Mala - Eyez VIP

Mala’s mastery is a credit to the dubstep scene. Every time he has a release, it’s a celebration (as is every DMZ release, come to mention it). His sound is deep, intense without ugly, vacuous wobbles (I’m trying to avoid using the term ‘intelligent’); a great source of inspiration through and through. I can only describe his tunes as a journey through sound, a message, a story sometimes? He takes urban dance music, bass music, whatever the hell you want to call it music, to a new level. Way, way beyond just beats and sub. 

It’s also great to see Tempa maintaining that early halfstep moodiness, namely the above (SP:MC Ft. Lx-One ‘Hunted’, which comes with a though-provoking intro supposedly sampling either Kiefer Sutherland or Vin Diesel, to match the minimal, mesmerising riddim), and the below (J:Kenzo ‘Ruffhouse’, which contains similar pots and pans percussive offbeats to the SP:MC, and ‘Therapy’ which is far less dark, but listen to it from start to finish and you’ll realise how cleverly the tune progresses). Youngsta-favoured heavyweight (‘Ammunition Productions’, E1; says it all), dubstep purist biznis. Really like the artwork (selected by Tempa management and designer Steven Dawson) - minimal but poignant. This really makes me want to go through the label’s back catalogue from the past few years (the old stuff is all gold-dust, goes without saying).

Incidentally, it’s nice to hear Terror Danjah on a pre-Xmas funkytastic remix of Roska’s ‘Without It’. Tough, x-amounts of disgusting bass slumps, hi-q’d snares to slap your worst enemy around the face with, and plenty of wining syncopated patterns. Out on ‘RKS Allstars Vol. 2’. RAAAA!!! Just in time for my first gig in Taipei! No snow here though…
